Thank Routeco It's Friday! (TRIF)

It’s officially spring and the improving weather conditions led us to believe that summer was on its way. But after the past few days of torrential rain, freezing temperatures, hail and thunder, the weather reports have confirmed that we are still very much struggling to get out of winter.

One of the team are away enjoying the Caribbean sunshine, and it has the rest of us questioning “when will this weather end?”

If you’re like me, you’ll find spring difficult to work with. One day it’s warm enough to wear a t-shirt and jeans, the next day you’re heading out in a huge coat and scarf.

You decide the sky looks clear and it’s warm enough to enjoy a jog outside, five minutes later the rain is hammering down on you, and not to forget those brave souls who have braved it out in their flip flops only to have the weather change on them.

Only a few more months until the hotter weather arrives!

Until then most of us will be browsing through holiday brochures picking our dream destinations for this summer.

Are you daring enough to dress in summer clothes yet or are you still wearing the winter wardrobe?

Have a great weekend!

Rachael

Routeco shoot goes out with a Bang!

Last Friday we took part in the Rittal and Routeco Clay Pigeon shoot located in Winchester. The event was in association with The Big Shoot and Marwell Activity Centre.

Despite a cloudy start to the day the weather proved to be in our favour with spouts of sunshine keeping everyone warm.

The day featured different shooting disciplines which made it ideal for both the marksmen and the beginners. Everyone was split into groups with an expert instructor alongside, all participants had 50 targets throughout the event.

The event was a great success with JMG winning overall trophy and MPH sleeping partner picking up the wooden spoon!

In Summary of the fantastic day, MurrayTech stated “We value the Routeco Partnership, MPH, a good networking event and Hemco, looking forward to the next PLC workshop early in May.”

We would like to thank everyone who attended and helped organise the event for a fabulous day!

DLR: Raising Functionality while lowering Cost and Complexity

Engineers have multiple options when it comes to designing, installing, networking and configuring automation assets. However, as technology has evolved, becoming even more powerful, the engineer's job has become commensurately more complex. It is for this reason that Rockwell Automation has developed Integrated Architecture for use in both its high-level and mid-range automation platforms.

Key technologies that take advantage of Integrated Architecture include: Logix programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and programmable automation controllers (PACs), scalable controllers with a common control engine and development environment; Kinetix high-performance motion control systems; Stratix managed networks; View visualisation products and, of course, the aforementioned PowerFlex variable-speed drives.

With the introduction of dual-port Ethernet capabilities into the latest PowerFlex models, Rockwell Automation has defined a new level of functionality, while actually decreasing complexity. Device Level Ring (DLR) is a network technology that takes advantage of embedded-switch functionality in automation devices, such as I/O modules, PACs and, in this instance, variable-speed drives.

While a network- or switch-level ring topology provides resilience to the network infrastructure, DLR technology adds device-level network resilience. So, how does this work?

When a DLR detects a break in the ring, it provides alternate routing of the data to help recover the network at extremely fast rates. Indeed, a 50-node DLR network can recover in less than 3ms. During this time, the connection between the PAC and the I/O device is not interrupted. Enhanced diagnostics built into DLR-enabled products also identify the point of failure, helping to speed maintenance and reduce mean time to repair.

In addition to superior network recovery performance, DLR technology helps simplify network architecture while still providing the flexibility to connect and coexist with other network topologies. Multiport EtherNet/IP devices equipped with DLR technology connect directly to neighbouring nodes and form a ring topology at the end devices. DLR offers many other advantages.

Simplified installation is possible because the Ethernet cabling is a daisy chain drive-to-drive; this in itself allows a linear topology that removes the necessity for an external switch in the network. The Linear topology provides the network with more distance because each daisy chain drop is another Ethernet link with the full stretch of the copper cable allowed between each node as opposed to a traditional centre point star configuration using external switches. External switches and linear topologies may be mixed in an architecture.

Set up is also more straightforward because the ring only requires two ports on the managed switch, meaning configuration of the switch can be simplified. This new dual port EtherNet/IP connection is also compatible with Automatic Device Replacement (ADC) - a feature that could benefit many customers, helping them to maintain their plant's availability. Rapid recovery from a fault or failure is more important than ever to help increase machine uptime and productivity.

With this new ADC technology, as well as offering simpler cabling, IP addresses can be automatically allocated when used in conjunction with a Stratix managed switch and any firmware changes can be automatically flashed over the network. What is more, drives (or indeed any other device on the EtherNet/IP network) can be automatically configured with the correct parameter set.

If you require further information on this functionality please do contact Routeco on 0370 607 1005, mention this article, and we can provide the necessary information you require, or alternatively arrange a visit from one of our Drives Specialists who can discuss your application in detail.

Travelling has been a popular topic of conversation lately due to the fact I am considering spending this summer abroad. I feel that travelling the world and experiencing other cultures is something that we should all do once in our lifetime. Not everyone feels the same and if you are anything like my parents, you are perfectly happy watching these destinations on the TV.

But if you have that spark of adventure inside of you, you should consider travelling to some of these places:

Mounting Biking – France
Avoriaz is one of 12 interconnected resorts in the Portes du Soleil region of the French Alps where man-made bike trails and alpine tracks create a spectacular playground for mountain bikers.

Great Barrier Reef – Australia
The reef contains an abundance of marine life and comprises of over 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays, this destination is definitely worth an all-day scuba-dive trip to experience all that it has to offer.

Ice Marathon – Antarctica
Every year Antarctica hosts an Ice Marathon, this takes place in temperatures of -20°C, though the brutal wind chill whipping round your chops can make it feel another 20 degrees below that.

Sporades Isles – Greece
In this tour of a super-quiet stretch of the Aegean Sea you can swim from Island to Island without the bother of carrying your kit, which will follow behind in the support boat. You’ll be sharing the craggy coastlines and its protected turquoise waters with dolphins, seals as the area is part of Europe’s largest natural marine park.

Rock Climbing – China
Yangshuo, a picturesque former fishing village, has been dubbed the adventure capital of China thanks in part to its accessibility but mostly due to the rock-climbing opportunities afforded by its many limestone karst peaks, which rise strikingly from the dense emerald-green vegetation.

Have you visited any of these amazing destinations?

Have you visited somewhere spectacular I haven’t mentioned? Feel free to share!

Have a great weekend!

The Guardmaster 440G-LZ Switch saving lives, saving power and improving productivity

The next Generation Guard locking switch 440G-LZ from Allen-Bradley Guardmaster is a light duty guard locking switch designed for partial body access guard doors. Combining microprocessor technology with an RFID coded actuator, the 440G-LZ features a locking bolt drive mechanism that will only lock when the correct actuator is detected. The locking bolt is continuously monitored for correct insertion within the actuator. This extra functionality allows the 440G-LZ to be certified to PLe, Cat. 4 -- the highest level of safety for guard door position and lock monitoring and can be connected directly or in series with other PLe, Cat. 4 rated safety devices. Designed to ISO 14119.

While the 440G-LZ provides this high safety performance level it consumes 60% less energy when compared to other guard locking switches, making it a truly "green" safety solution. It achieves this level of energy efficiency thanks to advanced algorithms and a bi-stable solenoid design that consumes little power for switching, regardless of whether it’s in the locked or unlocked state.

Typical applications include: Protection of personnel and protection of machine production 'up time'.

The Guardmaster 440G-LZ is designed for small form factor solenoid guard locking application requirements mainly in the Food & Bev, and Packaging industries.

Get Connected; Reductions in Wiring Time, Leading to Increased Productivity

Let’s face it: in business, time is money. The last thing you can afford is costly downtime due to incorrect field wiring and troubleshooting your field operations. Quick and easy field wiring solutions not only help reduce your wiring time and maintenance costs, but they allow for more accurate connections.

Let us help you meet your project deadlines with our versatile line of Allen-Bradley I/O field wiring interface modules and cables that can help reduce in-panel programmable controller wiring to discrete (on/off) or analog field devices by up to 75%. This means quicker, more accurate connections between control and factory devices when compared to traditional wiring methods.

Have you struggled with assembling rails of terminal blocks or cutting stripping, labelling and terminating your 20 to 40 control wires per I/O module? With an Allen-Bradley Bulletin 1492 wiring systems solution you simply mount the interface module (IFM) onto a Standard DIN rail. Then attach the 1492 cable with its pre-wired programmable
controller removable terminal block to the programmable controller I/O module and plug the connector into the IFM. In addition, a select group of modules have field Removable Terminal blocks (RTBs) to further simplify initial installation and replacement.

Are wiring errors your concern? We can help you by providing point-to-point connections which reduce the likelihood of mistakes. Not only will you finish installation more quickly, but you’re most likely to be up and running the first time you start up your application.

Troubleshooting an assembled wiring system is easy should an I/O problem arise. Simply pinpoint the problem by looking for glowing LEDs or blown-fuse indicators on selected IFMs.

You’ll see troubleshooting in a whole new light. What have you got to lose? Except maybe more time with another wiring method.

If you would like further details on these products, some free configuration software, and further details on suitable applications please do contact us on 0370 607 1000, or via email on; info@routeco.com.
