Thank Routeco It's Friday! (TRIF)

Social media has come a long way since it first started at the end of the 20th Century and today we find ourselves checking more social media networks than ever before! Each network has its own specific benefit and appeal, find them outlined below:

Facebook

The most popular social media network in the world with over 500 million people now using it around the world. It allows you to keep in contact with (and snoop in on) those you are friends with, or people you might have gone to school with, or even the nice couple you met on holiday last year.

Twitter

Twitter is great for short, snappy statements. Something that is easy to read when you are in a hurry, after all no one likes to spend hours reading the same story when you could have read several!

Instagram

Instagram is essentially an image based version of twitter. Users post photos (in which they can add a selection of very cool filters) and hashtag words that are relevant to the photo. The hash tagging will then connect it to other photos associated with the same words.

Snapchat

This is a relatively new network. Originally created for sending images but has now been expanded to videos too. This allows users to send photos/videos to their contacts for a selected time which they can set. (This stops your friends showing their other friends that not so pretty picture you sent the other day).

LinkedIn and Google+

These networks are both great for business! LinkedIn allows you to connect with your colleagues and build more connections within your industry. Google+ allows you to follow the companies you are interested in, keeping you up to date with their actions.

What social network are you addicted to?

Tune in to next week’s TRIF to read a guest blog from Laura.

Have a lovely weekend!

The Next Generation of Engineers

The Worcester Electric Club has made a generous donation to the Engineering Students of Worcester College of Technology. The club which was closed in 2013 had been in existence for 66 years, the members decided that it was only fitting to donate the remaining funds to the next generation of engineers.

With the support of Routeco, the college were able to buy programmable logic controller equipment which will mean students are able to practise their trade with the equipment found in the industry.

The Chairman of the Electric Club, Keith Goddard explained “We wanted the money to go towards an electrical purpose and in support of a local organisation. The College was suggested because of past links with the Club and its reputation within the engineering industry. It was a unanimous decision, especially as this equipment will support the next generation of engineers.”

Matt Harwood, Manager of Engineering at the College, explained how the equipment will help the students;

“It’s very generous of Worcester Electric Club to give the College the funding. It has meant that our students are able to practise with industry standard equipment benefiting their employability prospects.”

Ben Lloyd from Routeco, explained his enthusiasm about being part of this opportunity,

“We’re very keen to support this educational project, as it’ll increase the longevity in young people’s learning in this specific trade.”

Mark Bettington from Routeco was also a key asset to this process, spending a lot of time working with the college to support their needs. With the funds from the Electric Club Routeco helped to purchase 7 Micro800 PLC systems.

Thank Routeco It's (Nearly) Friday! (TRIF)

This week we are celebrating Friday a day early with the forthcoming Easter weekend!

In the last few weeks we have seen a series of sporting activities that mark the beginning of the British summer with the London marathon last weekend and The Grand National the week before (and we still have the Grand Prix to look forward to!)

The weather has also been telling us that Summer is on its way with the beautiful sunshine we have had over the past few days forcing us to put our sunglasses on (not that we’re complaining), it’s nearly hard to believe we’re in the UK with weather like this.

And if that isn't enough to tell you summer is on the way we also have the smell of freshly cut grass filling the air and the sight of bright yellow fields and baby lambs.

What are the first signs of summer for you?

Have a lovely long weekend!

Birthdays!

Each year, no matter what age we may turn, we always look forward to our Birthdays…

It could be because of the party you know you’ll get, or the extra time with the family you might spend, or even for the huge chocolate cake you’ll find yourself nibbling at for the next week.

This week we celebrated a birthday in the Marketing Department and for every birthday there is preparation to be done! This meant coming in early to set up the department with banners and balloons and filling the desk with cards and presents to surprise our co-worker when they arrived.

We have a tradition here at Routeco that the birthday person should bring in an assortment of cakes, biscuits and not to mention savoury goods for everyone to enjoy. (That’s if you are lucky enough to reach the desk in time to catch the sausage rolls which usually disappear after the first minute…)

After this we look forward to celebrating with a meal to make sure they have been well and truly spoilt for their birthday!

How do you celebrate a birthday in the office?

Have a great weekend!

Solid State Relays from Finder

The 77 series “single-pole” solid state relays from Finder are now available in eight new versions, including a 30A current rating to complement the existing 5A models. The range includes distinct models for zero-voltage and instantaneous switch on.

The existing 5A model range is designed specifically for lighting control where zero-voltage switching can significantly reduce high inrush currents. The instantaneous switch on feature provides near instant switching for high speed operation, and simultaneous switching in multi-phase circuits, such as three phase motors.

The high inrush capability of 520A (10ms) guarantees reliability over a long life in a wide range of applications, particularly the switching of lighting where power factor compensation and electronic ballasts have historically been problematic, also making this ideal for the control of heating, solenoids and motors.

The relays are ideal for use in control panels and cabinets in both industrial and commercial applications due to their 22.5mm housing incorporating the heat sink and designed for 35mm rail mounting.

Features:

  • Can switch single phase motors up to 2.5kW or lamp loads up to 6000W
  • Silent, high speed switching
  • Suitable for many environments
  • Input voltages of 230Vac and 24Vdc

Stop thinking of Energy as a Fixed Cost

Global investment in the clean energy sector has risen nearly fivefold, growing from $54 billion in 2004 to $269 billion world-wide in 2012.
Driving energy efficiency throughout industry is advanced manufacturing technologies such as energy aware control systems that can sense and report energy consumed in the process.
30% of the energy used in the U.S. goes to industrial applications and the majority of use goes to electric motors. That’s a great place to start.
With advanced manufacturing, companies can add the cost of energy to the raw materials cost, or the bill of materials (BOM). It’s a wise strategy because the amount of energy used to make products is as important as the raw materials – the copper, sheet metal, nuts and bolts, plastic and chemicals – used within those products.
A decade ago, this wasn’t possible. Communication in manufacturing was much like the United Nations, where everyone around the table spoke a different language. Nothing gets done until you find a common way to communicate.
The same applies to manufacturing. The control system and the machines need to communicate and share information to act faster, smarter, and more efficiently.
That’s the concept behind The Connected Enterprise, where automation is integrated with the rest of the enterprise. And when I say integrated, I mean with everything: supply chain data, customer data, and of course, energy information.
The entire concept – managing energy on the BOM – is possible because the technology has advanced so far that we can now collect granular information on energy consumption without adding new power meters.
With advanced manufacturing and new technologies we’re innovating and standardising, you can now measure energy at the machine and device level so you know how much energy every single machine is using.
Now, what to do with that information? By collecting the data so accurately and in real-time, you can start negotiating with the smart grid. With visibility to your energy usage right from your iPad or smart device, you can figure out what energy rates will be for the next 24 hours and schedule operations to minimise energy usage during peak times.
If you’re a big energy consumer and you have the right information, managing those fluctuations to your advantage can save millions of dollars by year end.
In the U.S. alone, a 10 percent reduction in energy equals $6 billion in savings. These are the kinds of things we can do with smart manufacturing enabled by better technology, constant innovation, updated standards and a connected enterprise.
Bottom line: many manufacturers look at energy as a cost of doing business – and that must change. Energy is not a pure cost if you look at it more like an element on the BOM. Companies are always negotiating the cost of raw materials; with advanced manufacturing solutions and active energy management, now they can start dynamically optimising energy consumption and reduce that cost rather than treating it as fixed.

Imagine what you could do with all the money and energy you save.

April Fools

This week we celebrated the first of April which means just one thing, it was April fool’s day!

We all celebrate this in different ways and if you’re anything like the marketing team, you were sceptical of any pranks that might be pulled on your by your colleagues.

Every year the organisations deemed most unlikely to pull off an April Fools prank, do. Here are some of this year’s top pranks:

Square Eggs

ITV reported that a Freedom Food Farm had become the first in the world to rear chickens that lay square eggs. They even interviewed a “farmer” who worked with the chickens. Although the story was ridiculous it was presented in such a way that made many believe it was real (including me!).

New Pound Coin

The Telegraph online reported that Alex Salmond, a Scottish politician was to replace the queen on the new Scottish pound coin which sparked up mass controversy.

Banning the Selfie

The Metro announced that the British Government will be banning the ‘Selfie’ shortly. Needless to say it was not taken too seriously.

Cats you may know

If you are a cat lover like me the next prank will really take the top position. LinkedIn introduced a ‘cats you may know’ page in which cats will be able to network with other cats, and see potential contacts th ey’ve ran into in the streets or seen messing around in their owner’s yard.

Have a great weekend!

A brighter environment for Routeco's offices

Here at Routeco we have a strong commitment to sustainability and are continually exploring ways to reduce our carbon footprint.

We identified that replacing the fluorescent lighting at head office in Milton Keynes would yield significant energy savings while improving lighting levels for staff. A comprehensive evaluation was carried out of LED panels from a number of manufacturers, assessing product quality and aesthetics as well as light output and light quality.

Routeco’s Jamie Aitken recalled: “There was a lot of variation in both light output and price between the different luminaires and it was clear that Philips offered the best combination of quality, performance and value for money. Once the CoreLine LED Panel had been selected, Mico Lighting
provided a full lighting design and helped us develop a business case.”

Mico’s Fiona Thomson added: “It was clear that the CoreLine luminaires would greatly improve the lighting in the offices and we predicted that Routeco would see a return on investment within around 3 years when installation costs were taken into account.” In all 240 x 42W CoreLine LED Panel luminaires have been installed by Milton Keynes-based Spartan Electrical Contractors throughout the offices.

These replaced 327 luminaires, each using 4 x 18W fluorescent tubes, resulting in a reduction in installed electrical load of more than 57%. One of the challenges facing the installer was the complexity of ductwork in the ceiling void, but the low profile of the CoreLine luminaires ensured the project went smoothly.

“The contractor commented on how easy the luminaires were to fit and praised the CoreLine panel as ‘the best LED luminaire he’d seen’. The lighting is now much brighter and the response from staff has been very positive. Many staff have said they can perform their tasks more effectively under the new lighting and quite a few commented that their eyes don’t feel as tired in the afternoons as they used to,” Jamie Aitken continued.

The CoreLine LED Panel is a high output LED luminaire that is ideal for upgrading recessed fluorescent lighting in 600 x 600mm and 1200 x 300mm ceiling grids. It is fully compliant with requirements for display screens and with a luminous efficacy of over 80 lm/W qualifies for Enhanced Capital Allowances. CoreLine LED Panel luminaires are also available in surface mounted and suspended versions.

Some Problems do have a Readymade Solution

Blogger: Kevin Kirby - Safety & Sensing Product Sales Specialist
Subject: 440G-LZ Guard Locking Switch

The world of safety circuit design is constantly changing with new legislation and standards amending the way that we have previously implemented solutions to protect our operators and machines.

The latest brick generating waves in the safety pond, is a new standard ISO 14119 which focuses on the use of safety interlocks on guards. It offers a lot of recommendations on the design and use of guard interlocks and covers a lot of the newer technology products that are becoming available. One of the key points which is causing some issues, is the downgrading of safety levels when installing switches wired in series. Particularly if you have a door in the string that is opened once an hour, this can have a major effect on how you design your circuits in the future. The maximum that you can have to maintain a PLd circuit will be 5, any additional switches will reduce the circuit to PLc. If you have two frequently opened doors then the maximum achievable will be PLc. Previously there were no limits and these have been implemented to remove the issues of fault masking generating conditions where faults can lay undetected in the circuit.

So what can we do?

You could wire all of your switches back individually to a Safety PLC or modular relay system. Alternatively you could break your system into smaller sections by installing additional safety relays. All of these solutions would mean a radical change to the machine wiring and potentially much higher costs. The other alternative would be to fit a self-monitoring Ple rated switch that could be wired in a similar fashion to the existing circuit. There would be no limit to the number of switches and your circuit would be upgraded to the highest level Ple provided that the rest of the circuit was compliant.

We have had Sensaguard non-contact switches with this facility for some time, but we now have a Ple guard locking switch.

The 440G-LZ has a number of unique features which lend itself to all types of partial access guard design. Using RFID technology, it will not lock until the correct actuator is in place and its self-monitoring will turn off its outputs if any of the correct operating conditions are not met. It has a bi-stable solenoid which gives it a “Green” power consumption of 60% less than conventional switches. IP69K rated and ECOLAB certified and a high holding force for its size at 1300 newtons. Designed to be mounted on aluminium extrusions and available in power to release and power to lock versions……….

For once it is great to have a solution to your problem even before you know that you have one.
