Reducing the Risk of Arc Flash with Grace Engineered Products

Permanent Electrical Safety Devices (PESDs) are electrical components hardwired to a source of voltage(s) and installed into electrical systems. These enable engineers to validate zero electrical energy without being exposed to voltage. PESDs inherently minimise arc flash and electrical shock hazards because they reduce voltage exposure, provide voltage labelling on all sources and provide 24/7 visual and/or audible indication of voltage.

When engineers can determine a zero electrical energy state without any voltage exposure to themselves, their electrical safety program is safer. Verifying the proper operation of a meter and testing for absence of voltage before working on an electrical conductor (“test before touch”) for all practical purposes should always remain a habitual practice for engineers. The goal of PESDs is to ensure that when engineers “test before touch”, that they test only de-energised conductors.

Without PESDs, a failure of an isolator may go undetected until the engineer discovers live voltage after opening the control panel. This exact scenario is a common cause of arc flash. A direct short circuit may result from one mistake by the engineer while checking voltage.

Voltage detectors are a low-cost, redundant voltage verification tool that reduces arc flash risk, increases safety and adds productivity at a low installed cost.

We stock a wide range of “Safeside” voltage indicators and portals from Grace Engineered Products, who are a Rockwell Automation Encompass Partner. We also supply customised communications GracePorts and IR Windows that allow engineers to access control panels easily through closed doors.

ProSoft introduces IEC 61850 Server Module for ControlLogix

ProSoft Technology has released two new energy solutions, the IEC 61850 Server Module for ControlLogix® and the EtherNet/IP™ to IEC 61850 Client Gateway.

The
in-chassis module allows Rockwell Automation ControlLogix PACs to match Intelligent Electronic Devices (IEDs) on an IEC 61850 Ethernet network, enabling the PAC to exchange data with SCADA systems.

In substation automation applications, the module enables non-smart electrical substation devices, such as transformers and switchgear, to present their data as IEC 61850 IEDs to the SCADA system. An Add-On Instruction in RSLogix™ 5000 allows for data transfer between the PAC and the module, simplifying data retrieval.

Features of the solutions include:
  • The EtherNet/IP™ to IEC 61850 gateway allows IEDs on an IEC 61850 network to communicate with PACs on an EtherNet/IP™ network.
  • The gateway’s two independent Ethernet ports allow the protocols to be on different subnets.
  • The configuration software that comes with the gateway uses IED configuration files to import complex IEC 61850 data structures.
  • The utility enables premier integration by creating AOIs that are imported into the Logix project, using the IEC 61850 tags so there is no need to retype them.

Quick and Easy to Install Air and Water Heat Exchangers

By working in partnership with Rittal, we are able to bring you a range of air and water heat exchangers as part of the climate control range.

The air and water heat exchangers may be wall mounted and can be completely removed from the outside the of enclosure, without having to open the enclosure door, which results in both easier and quicker installation.

Units supplied with either the Basic controller or the eComfort controller show the enclosure internal temperature on the digital display. Those supplied with the eComfort controller also incorporate the Eco-mode control functionality, which was first used in Rittal's TopTherm Bluee cooling units.

The Eco-mode system employs an intelligent strategy to effectively target the use of energy, disabling the internal fan when the temperature inside the enclosure falls to 10 °C below the level desired. The fan is then enabled for a period of 30 seconds every 10 minutes to ensure the accuracy of the sensed temperature and ensure adequate air distribution before being permanently enabled when the temperature rises to 5 °C below the set point temperature.

At Routeco we have a great, easy to use thermal label to help you determine the temperature of your products. By adhering the small label to an internal surface of your enclosure, you will be able to see how hot or cold it is from the temperature gauge. The thermal label is quick to stick with results appearing straight away and is suitable for all types of equipment.

To request your free thermal label please email info@routeco.com and one of our sales engineers will come and help select the best product for you.

With today’s economic climate, the ability to work with global customers and expanding global markets is even more important than ever. As some country markets shrink, others grow, and as a result machine builders must offer a wider geographical ‘shop window’ in order to exploit these growth markets.

It is not a quick process, but it can be made far simpler by leveraging the capabilities of suppliers that are already in place in your target countries and offering technologies and services to the markets you wish to access. This support is not just limited to higher level automation solutions in large manufacturing plants throughout the world. For example, the midrange automation control solutions is ideal for machines and equipment that require integration and flexibility but sized correctly, enjoy the same level of coverage across the globe.

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) need to export to survive and, as a result, they must develop machines that easily integrate into applications and are supported across the globe. This has two advantages. Not only can you integrate with large multinationals that rely on in-house global standards, but you can also serve smaller customers in developing markets who are looking to expand.

No matter what local standards and legislation are in place, you don’t want to have to redesign your equipment for each market. Just as importantly, you need to consider what sort of support you can offer a customer on the other side of the world.

So if it is emerging markets, or simply larger customers looking to develop global standards, the support of a global ally is paramount towards the success of market penetration.
